National Public Radio, Washington, D.C.
I’ve been associated with NPR since 1979, primarily as a Senior Editor and Producer. While on full-time staff, my responsibilities included creating story ideas and editing copy on deadline, producing pieces for the programs and acting as line producer for NPR's nationally broadcast news programs. During my tenure, I edited or produced all of the network’s major news programs, including “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered” and “Talk of the Nation." In addition to my news duties, I also was the producer of two promotional videos for the network, “NPR: A Year in Review” in 1996 and 1997. In the field of music, I was the composer and performer of theme and program music for various NPR shows, including “Talk of the Nation”, “Day to Day”, “The Motley Fool Radio Program” and Weekend Edition Sunday's "Voices in the News" theme. I continue to consult for NPR’s news and programming divisions.
At NPR, I was a staff recipient for two of journalism's highest awards, three different times: the duPont Columbia Award in 1980 and 1996; and the George Foster Peabody Award in 1982.
CBS News, Washington, D.C. (Television)
Staff producer for the daily CBS news broadcasts “Nightwatch” and “America Tonight”.
As a segment producer for Leslie Stahl and Charles Kuralt (“America Tonight”) and Charlie Rose (“Nightwatch”) I generated story ideas and developed them into pieces for the programs. I was also on-call producer for the “CBS Evening News” and “CBS Morning News” programs and produced numerous pieces for those broadcasts.
National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C.
Senior Editor and correspondent for “Oceans of Life”, an hour-long radio documentary co-produced by National Geographic and National Public Radio. “Oceans” explores the vibrant yet fragile environment which covers over 70 per cent of our planet. I was responsible for all copy editing and developed story ideas for the program. In addition, as one of the program’s correspondents, I reported from the underwater oceanographic habitat “Aquarius” (which lies on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean) and went diving in research submarine to a depth of 1000 feet.
